Growth and Expansion - Emergency Department

Project: Expanded Emergency Department & New Parking
Facility at Ellis Hospital
Location: Rosa Road side of the Ellis Hospital
Objective: Ellis Medicine currently operates two
Emergency Departments (EDs) located within a few miles of each other on
Nott and McClellan Streets in Schenectady. To increase efficiency and
cost-effectiveness, Ellis Medicine will consolidate down to one full
service, 24/7 ED in Schenectady County.
Project Highlights:
- Expanded treatment stations from 39 to 62
- Increased capacity for up to 80,000 annual visits (Ellis is the
largest provider of emergency care in the region)
- Future expansion possible to handle 25,000 additional visits
should community need arise
- Improved patient flow
- Enhanced privacy
- New two-story 208-space parking facility on Rosa Road
Project Cost: $45 million
Funding: Borrowing and Philanthropy
Targeted Groundbreaking: Early 2012
Related steps:
- When the new Golub Center for Emergency Services is
complete, Ellis plans to convert the ED at the Ellis Health
Center on McClellan Street into an urgent care center (a
more appropriate setting for the large volume of
non-emergency cases seen here).
- Ellis is working with state officials to build an
extended hour urgent care facility in Southern Saratoga
County to better meet the health care needs of residents in
this fast growing community.
